Photo of the Week #22

This week’s photo was taken from Vista Slope (in Mountain View, right next to work), looking North.

Photo of the Week #21

This week’s photo is of Lick Observatory in San Jose. It’s a nice winding drive up there, highly recommended in a roadster with the tops down (I hear a motorcycle works well too).

Photo of the Week #20

As mentioned in my previous post, I took a drive up to the Marin Headlands yesterday to try out some new lenses. This week’s photo is the result of that trip. Looking out from Hawk Hill, you can see a lot of the San Francisco Bay; in this shot you can see the Golden Gate Bridge (with a small patch of fog approaching the Southern tower), the San Francisco Skyline, Alcatraz Island, Treasure Island, and a bunch of sailboats out in the bay.

Lenses

When I got back from my recent (and unplanned) trip back to Newfoundland, I had two new camera lenses waiting for me. A wide-angle (Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM) and a telephoto (Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM). To the right is a photo of the two new lenses and my 50mm (Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 Mk II), the 10-22mm is huge compared to the rest of my gear (admittedly it’s small compared to most of the big ‘L’ series glass), but it’s also the best lens I currently own. I’m also reasonably impressed with the telephoto, because there were a couple of times in the past when I would have liked to have more reach; 200mm is quite a bit on a APS-C camera (equivalent to a 320mm lens on a 35mm camera), much more than that would get tough to hand-hold without upgrading to a stabilized lens.

So, since this weekend was really nice (21°C and sunny), I took the top down on my car and went for a drive up to the Marin Headlands and Hawk Hill to really try them out. You can see the results of this trial in my ‘Scenic Photos’ album. I fully expect to add to this album at least a few more times later on, given that there are a lot of scenic places in the area (Kirby Cove, Rodeo Beach, Point Bonita, Tennessee Valley, etc.) but most of those places involve walking/hiking that I simply wasn’t up for yesterday.

Photo of the Week #19

This week’s photo is of the lighthouse in Cape Spear, Newfoundland. It was a pretty nice day, and I really like the dramatic sky.
