About Me

They call me Geoff, Geoff Holden. I’m from Newfoundland, Canada, and have lived here most of my life (all but a four month period in Ottawa and sixteen months in California).
Professional
My education is that of a Software Engineer; I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland. I plan to earn a Master’s degree in the same field, focusing on AI, Machine Learning, Robotics, Image Processing, etc.
I’m currently working for IONA in their St. John’s, Newfoundland office.
Recreational
I’m an avid poker player (low-stakes, no-limit Texas Hold’em) and try to play whenever I can gather enough friends together to have a decent game.
I enjoy driving my Pontiac Solstice, especially when the weather is warm and dry and I can take the top down–in the Bay Area that was most of the time, now that I’m back home it’s more of a treat.
I’m getting into photography, I picked up a DSLR camera in October 2006 and I’d like to get better at it. You can check on my progress there in my photo gallery, particularly in the Photo of the Week album.
I’m also a bit of a movie buff–I will see almost all the big and/or critically acclaimed movies that come out.
Open Source
I’m an advocate of Open Source software, and have written/maintain two such programs (admittedly with very small audiences) png2html–a program that converts an image into a HTML page, and XFN Graph–a web spider that graphs XFN annotated links between sites.
I’m a Linux user, both at home and at work, and was a very active member of the St. John’s Linux Users Group before I moved to Palo Alto. Now that I’ve returned, I plan to be an active member again.
