Backups

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

It doesn’t matter what I say here, because nobody starts making regular backups until after they lose something important.

It’s like the dirty little secret of computer professionals, everyone agrees that backups are a good idea, but nobody actually does them until it’s too late. The few people who make regular backups rarely, if ever, test them–which means they may be in for a rude awaking when a drive does die. And drives do die–I’ve seen my own ones go bad, […]

New Site Launch

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

As of tonight, I’ve launched another blog–given that I don’t update this one often enough, having two can only make the problem better, right? The new blog is a photo blog, called ‘GKH Photography’ and is located at gkhphoto.com. The idea is that all my photography will happen there, leaving this site for mostly words about stuff (there may be a photo or two included with a post every now and then, but they will be […]

2007 Goals

Monday, January 1st, 2007

These are not quite resolutions, but a short list of my (personal, not professional) goals for this year. I’ve never been in to the whole ‘make resolutions and change your life on the first of January’ thing. Maybe it’s because I’m not really that long out of school, and the start of the school year always seemed like a more logical place trace in some vices for virtues. So these are goals, they’re fuzzier than resolutions and if I get […]

Go ahead, try this at home

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

On October 5th, Google Code Search was unleashed upon the world. People have found many uses for it so far, like finding things that people don’t want found, or finding other security bugs. Now, some people have been known to find some entertainment or humour in off searches (I wouldn’t know anything about that). So, in that vein, what would make good code searches?

I thought to search for common comments that developers […]

My New Toy

Moon Over Golden Gate Bridge

I recently bought myself a digital camera, a Canon Digital Rebel XTi (called the EOS 400D outside North America, except in Japan where it’s the Kiss Digital X). It’s a 10.1 MP digital SLR, that can shoot 3 frames per second. I wanted to learn photography for a while, so I finally broke down and made the big purchase. I’ve been reading a few photography sites online (mostly […]

So Many Things

Sunday, April 23rd, 2006

Once again, I haven’t posted in a while. My targeted average of one post per week is falling apart at the seams… oh well, maybe I’ll get it back up.

There have been many things to do down here in the valley. Last Sunday, myself and Naeim saw Seth MacFarlane (creator of Family Guy). He’s an entertaining speaker, plus we got to see one of next years episodes (before it’s been animated, so it was really just storyboards & voices).

This weekend, […]

Geoff’s New Ride

Saturday, April 8th, 2006

My big news this week was that I (finally) got my new car. It’s a sly (grey) Pontiac Solstice, with ebony leather interior. Pretty close to fully loaded; it has everything except XM, OnStar, the smoker’s package, acoustic headliner, and automatic transmission (and who’d want that?). It’s a very nice ride, but I have to get used to the thumbs-up’s and approving nods that I get from other drivers.

The one thing I don’t understand is why credit ratings […]

Ping Poäng

Sunday, April 2nd, 2006

I’m now officially moved in, I think I got my last piece of furniture (the Ikea Poäng chair, see photo). There are a few more furnished photos in my Apartment album. The only thing left to do is to get a larger TV… the 13″ one don’t really cut it for movies and Xbox.

I’ve been pretty busy for the last little while, between trying to learn the Googely way of doing things at work and trying to get everything else […]

Assembly Day

Sunday, March 19th, 2006

Today I bought furniture–table, chairs and a sofabed.

I can’t help but be impressed by the engineering that goes into Ikea furniture. They’re able to design and build something that’s not only functional & inexpensive, but can also be easily assembled by somebody with no mechanical ability. All that’s required to put it together are tools that they provide with every item (allen key(s), wrench) and a page or two of instructions (purely pictoral–language free). It might be just me, but […]

Small World Weekend

Saturday, March 11th, 2006

So, yesterday I was informed that an old friend, who I’ve been out of touch with since undergrad (haven’t even seen in passing since Christmas of ‘02), is also living/working in the Bay Area. What are the odds? (really, if someone can actually compute them, I’d be interested). I met up with this friend for hapy hour last night, which was good.

Also, I get to see Lori tonight & tommorow, while she’s in San Francisco.

In other news, I […]
