Big Move

Sunday, March 5th, 2006

OK, it’s been a long time since I last posted… again. My one post a week goal has taken quite a hit lately, but I have an excuse… I’m settling in to my new job (Cluster Systems Administrator for Google), and attempting to adjust my internal clock for 4.5 hour time difference. Although the time difference meant that I had no trouble waking up and getting to work in time for breakfast.
I’m currently living in temporary housing, and […]

Torino 2006 Standings on your Google Homepage

Sunday, February 12th, 2006

For anybody who’s following the Olympics, I spent a couple hours this afternoon creating a Google Personalized Homepage module for the current medal standings.

If you want to add it to your page, click on the ‘Add Content’ link, and paste this URL into the ‘Create a Section’ box.

It might be a little slow/ugly/etc. but it’s the first module I’ve attempted to write, and trying to do a screen scrape of a web page in […]

You don’t know how much you own

Wednesday, February 8th, 2006

…until you try to move it all.

Cliche, I know, but apparently it’s true.

Over the next couple of weeks, I’m faced with the daunting task of deciding what to take to California with me, and what to leave here in Newfoundland.

I’ve already decided to leave my car behind. It dosen’t have air conditioning, plus with Google’s incentives it’s a good chance to treat myself to a nicer car (still not a definite decision, but hopefully).

The harder decisions […]

Bad Presentations

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

This is my little rant about bad presentations, inspired by a link about “The 10/20/30 Rule of PowerPoint” link I saw on digg. Now, I don’t claim to be a perfect presenter, or even a very good one, but I like to think that I give a reasonable presentation.

The “10/20/30 rule” that Kawasaki puts forward is that your presentation should have no more than 10 slides, last no longer than 20 minutes, and use no smaller […]

Green Party spamming blogs

Monday, January 16th, 2006

Last night it seems that Stephen Eli Harris (the Green Party candidate for St. John’s East in the coming federal election) toured around any Newfoundland blogs he could find (including this one), leaving comments and links to his own political blog. We’ve checked the logs for a few of our interconnected sites and it seems he’s visited them all, but only left comments on sites that explicitly state that the owner lives in Newfoundland.

I can only assume […]

Satanic Inferences?

Satanic Inferences

I was just browsing Digg, and I saw this story about a 80’s D&D cartoon, which is not very interesting by itself (at least not to me, I don’t remember the series at all). What was more interesting is that the series was pulled for “satanic inferences” and when I went to the […]

Welcome to 2006

Sunday, January 1st, 2006

Well, 2005 is now gone, over, finished. Although I’m not the type to make resolutions (I’d have dropped them by mid-January anyways) I do generally take this time to look back over the previous year and see what (if anything) I’ve accomplished.

In 2005, perhaps the biggest life-changing event for me was that I left my job, and went back to school. (Which is interesting because in 2004 I left school and got a job.) I wrote and released

I Have Returned

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005
3947

I have returned from my wonderful trip to California. It comes highly recommended, provided that you don’t mind the long flights.

While in the area I was able to catch up with Naeim for a day, check out some of the places of note in geek history (i.e. Xerox PARC), and spend a day in San Francisco.

I’m currently in the process of getting my photos ready for print, but they will most likely be put on […]

Flying to California

Saturday, December 3rd, 2005

As many of you may know, I’m currently heading to California for an on-site interview with Google. I had intended on posting while waiting for my connecting flight in Toronto, but I’m shocked to find the lack of a wifi connection (well, except for an ad-hoc network called “pocket_pc2″, and I don’t believe that I’ll get very far with that). So this message will get posted when I next find a good net connection, most likely at my […]

Distractions

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

I’m easily distracted. OK I’ve said it. But now lets add some restrictions. I don’t get distracted by TV, music, people talking close by, etc. I get distracted by (what could be) interesting or useful projects.

Right now my priority is supposed to be (and really is) the background reading for my masters’ research, and the coursework that I have to do.

Now, distractions… What’s really interesting is that I don’t get distracted from my distractions. I realized this (again) when I […]
